Think you know everything there is to know about your state? Think again.
School taught us the basics about our home states, like the historical landmarks and the well-known facts, but we were never really given the weird tidbits and obscure facts that make our home states even more interesting.
Here are facts about each of the U.S. states, from Alabama to Wyoming, you probably never knew about:
There’s a store in Scottsboro where you can purchase unclaimed baggage. It’s called The Unclaimed Baggage Center and it’s the only store of its kind in the U.S.
Alaska has some really strange laws that are largely unknown. It is apparently illegal to view a Moose from a plane, push a live moose out of a moving plane or whisper in someone’s ear while hunting a Moose.

There’s a new travel destination in Japan for cat lovers. Aoshima island, which is just a mile long and home to only 15 people, has become a tourist hot spot thanks to the dozens of cats who call the island home.
When local businesses closed down, people moved away from Aoshima in the 2000s. Cats moved into the abandoned buildings and now there are more than 100 roaming the village.
The cats are all safe because there are no cars or even bicycles on the island, and the townspeople look after them like their own pets.
If you want to visit the town there’s a ferry that makes a trip to the island every day, but unless you want to bunk with some stray cats it will be a short trip.
There’s no hotel or restaurants for visitors to use on the island, which is just the way the elderly people who live there like it.
Grilled cheese is one of those classic dishes that pretty much everyone can love because it’s so customizable – but have you ever heard of Cauliflower Grilled Cheese?!
Yes, it’s true, grilled cheese sandwiches can be low carb, and still taste absolutely delicious! Cauliflower is a surprising substitute for bread, but the taste and texture are spot on. Go on and give it a try – you might just make grilled cheeses with cauliflower from now on!
1 head cauliflower, (to make about 4 cups processed cauliflower)
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1/2 cup Parmesan, finely grated
1/2 teaspoon oregano
1 1/2 cups white Cheddar, shredded
Cut cauliflower into florets. Process cauliflower florets in a food processor until the texture resembles rice. Alternatively, you can grate the cauliflower.
In a medium bowl, combine processed cauliflower, eggs, Parmesan and oregano. Mix until evenly combined then season with salt and pepper.
Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Spray with cooking spray then scoop the cauliflower mixture into a small patty on one side of the pan. Repeat to form a second patty on the other side. These act as your “bread” slices. Press down on both pieces with a spatula and cook until golden underneath, about 5 minutes. Flip and cook until the other sides are golden, about 3 minutes more.
Top one cauliflower slice with cheese then place the other cauliflower slice on top. Cook until the cheese is melted, about 2 minutes more per side. Repeat with remaining ingredients.
There are all sorts of bars in the world. Dive bars, dance bars, strip bars and even board game bars, but there’s a new type of bar on the scene and people aren’t exactly drinking it up.
Avocaderia has opened its doors and it says it’s the world’s first Avocado only bar, and where else would it be but Brooklyn, NY?
The birthplace of the Hipsters has done it again, with a too-trendy take on an existing classic. Avocaderia serves smoothies, salads and even toast – all made with avocados.
Now many people love avocados, and it’s true that they have multiple health benefits and can be quite tasty. Even so though reaction to the bar has been less than thrilled.
It’ll take some time to see if the restaurant suits Brooklyn’s taste, but if social media is any indication it doesn’t look like people will be opening wide.
There’s been a rise in “one ingredient” bars and cafes that have done quite well. New York City also has a cookie dough cafe and a restaurant that only uses meatballs. Why meatballs and cookie dough spots are successful probably doesn’t need to be pointed out. Avocados? Well we’ll see.
Not everyone has fallen in love with the waxy, green fruit either. A restaurant in England recently banned it from the menu.
“Frankly, we’re bored of seeing it on every breakfast and brunch menu,” said George Notley, executive chef of the Firedog restaurant.
We all have things we can’t leave behind when we travel far from home. For some of us it’s a comfortable pair of shoes or digital camera. For others it’s a favorite snack that may be hard to find anywhere else.
Turns out when it comes to travelling even royals aren’t all that different from us.
In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Darren McGrady, Queen Elizabeth II’s former personal chef revealed some surprising information about a snack Her Majesty can’t be without: Chocolate biscuit cake.
The cake is a regular feature on the Buckingham Palace menu and the Queen loves it so much that a senior chef will bring it along on trips across the UK and around the world.
“Now the chocolate biscuit cake is the only cake that goes back [to the queen] again and again and again every day until it’s all gone,” McGrady said. “She’ll take a small slice every day until eventually there is only one tiny piece, but you have to send that up, she wants to finish the whole of that cake.”
However, the Queen does have to share the cake with some of the members of the royal family because both Prince William and Prince Harry are fond of the chocolatey treat. Former royal chef, Carolyn Robb told You Magazine that “It was a firm favourite in the royal nursery; so much so that, many years later, Prince William chose to have chocolate biscuit cake at his wedding for the groom’s cake.”
Luckily, Chef McGrady shared his recipe so you too could get a taste of the chocolate cake.
It has the attention of almost all the royal family, so this cake must be heavenly. Want to eat like a king or queen? Then all you have to do is follow these steps.
Women across the globe will be celebrating International Women’s Day on March 8th. This year however, things are going to be done a little differently thanks to the Women’s March movement.
Inspired by the unity, love and liberation of the Women’s March, women and allies around the world will partake in ‘A Day Without A Woman’ strike to show the patriarchy that women are valuable members of society.
As outlined on the movement’s website, the purpose of the mass strike is to recognize “the enormous value that women of all backgrounds add to our socio-economic system–while receiving lower wages and experiencing greater inequities, vulnerability to discrimination, sexual harassment, and job insecurity. We recognize that trans and gender nonconforming people face heightened levels of discrimination, social oppression and political targeting. We believe in gender justice.”
Partaking in this strike doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll have to be physically present at a demonstration. There are at least 3 ways you can be in solidarity with your fellow women:
Women take the day off, from paid and unpaid labor
Avoid shopping for one day (with exceptions for small, women- and minority-owned businesses).
Wear RED in solidarity with A Day Without A Woman
The Women’s March website is also offering resources such as letter templates for your employer, “Out of the Office” auto response email and more.
Will you be taking part in ‘A Day Without A Woman’?
Here’s a heart-breaking stat for you: for every 1 homeless person, there are 5 homeless animals. These animals roam the streets looking for food, shelter, and warmth. But unfortunately, it doesn’t always end well. It takes a lot of people rescuing homeless animals to keep them safe.
When the Quebec Society for the Protection of Animals was patrolling the streets, they found what they believed to be a pile of trash on the road…until it moved.
This poor dog was matted from head to toe in mud and fur and could barely move due to the weight of it.
More than 50 of this poor dog’s size was fur and dirt. He was terrified of the shaver, but eventually settled down after realizing he was being helped.
After a long time in the grooming chair, the cute little dog was able to get some well deserved rest! He was a completely different animal after being so well cared for, and now he is waiting to be adopted!
The transformation is incredible! If you can no longer take care of your animal, please call you local SPCA for help.
If we’re being honest, we probably watch too much TV on a daily basis. We know characters, actors, plot lines, and useless trivia about some of our favorite shows.
But there’s some characters who even though you THINK you know all about them, you probably couldn’t spot them on the street. Costumes, makeup, and even just haircuts can all impact you ability to pick out a star.
These may not be the craziest transformations out there, but they certainly surprised me!
The awkward (yet lovable) Howard Wolowitz may be a goofy guy on TV, but in real life he’s a suave dude and dad of two kids.
The meth-mouth inmate on the Netflix hit series is definitely not as broken down as her character. Manning is all about fashion and loving her own style.
Headey is practically unrecognizable in her every day life, and that’s probably for the best. Game of Thrones is the most popular show on TV right now, and Headey can avoid crazy fans.
The Emmy-nominated actress is only 13 years old, but she’s already shot to stardom. Her long hair makes us remember she’s not, in fact, an escaped science experiment but in fact a young teen.
In the show, she’s a bad-ass who bakes men into meat pies. In real life, she loves lipstick and fashion…and she’s still a bad-ass.
If this isn’t the craziest transformation you’ve ever seen, you’re lying.
Galecki grew up in front of our eyes on Roseanne, and now we get to see that drastic transformation on the CBS hit comedy. However, in real life you probably wouldn’t recognize him on the street.
It would be hard to recognize ANYONE with that prosthetic forehead!
Since emancipating from her mother, Winter has embraced her personal style and is not afraid to try new fashion styles and hair trends.
The Canadian singer made her mark as a young girl on Nashville, and now she’s finding her way through her teen years and loving every minute of it!
Playing an abused, tortured, ex-government hitman, Diaz certainly keeps better groomed when not filming.
Would you have recognized him without his signature glasses and suspenders? Most people wouldn’t.
When he’s not yelling at Carl, Lincoln cleans up pretty nicely! It’s probably easier to shave when you don’t have zombies chasing after you.
The former boy band member looks a lot different than his wheelchair-bound character. The producers of the show said one of their biggest mistakes was casting McHale in a wheelchair because he was the show’s best dancer.
She’s not evil at all in real life! Parilla has a million dollar smile and absolutely NO evil powers.
There’s no denying that fast food workers get a bad reputation that they don’t all deserve. Most of the people at these restaurants work hard to make sure your food is hot, fresh and delicious.
But sometimes, as you’ll see, they have a little trouble with the small details. We’ve all gotten one less chicken nugget than we were supposed to, or a burger that wasn’t very warm, but these fast food fails are on another level entirely.
While some of these mistakes are pretty funny, they’re only amusing when they happen to other people. Try and imagine how you would react to finding one of these meals in your takeout bag.
1. Where’s the beef?
2. So close, just a little to the right and this would be perfect
3. I guess the instructions weren’t very clear
4. A little something extra with your sandwich?
5. “Would you like honey garlic, sweet and sour, or industrial floor cleaner?”
6. I guess this is technically a chicken sandwich…
7. This wrap was half price
8. Someone was snacking on the job
9. I never thought I would turn down fries, but….
10. Did you know McDonald’s sells mozza sticks in the UK? Well, kind of…

It’s so hard to eat right these days, even at fast food restaurants.
“Okay, so you’re Brad Pitt. That don’t impress me much. So you got the looks, but have you got the touch?”
When Shania Twain first released that song, people were stunned that she’d take a shot at Brad Pitt. I mean we all knew what she was saying. “Just because you’re beautiful doesn’t mean you know how to love me right,” but it still felt wrong to say it out loud.
That Don’t Impress Me Much became an anthem of the 90s for women everywhere, but targeting beloved Pitt was a bit taboo. Most girls probably wouldn’t kick him out of bed for eating crackers, so it was a shock to hear Twain say that. Personally, I didn’t sing the line just in case the movie star did come knocking.
Now, 20 years later, Shania Twain is making a comeback of epic proportions and she’s finally answer the question we all wanted to know: WHAT DO YOU HAVE AGAINST BRAD PITT?
Twain, now 51 years old, was doing an interview with Billboard when the topic of her 1997 hit single came up, and we finally got an answer to our question.
What doesn’t impress her about Pitt? His nude pictures.
“I remember I had a girlfriend visiting me and it was near Christmas and we were baking cookies,” Twain told Billboard. “I was writing this album and there was a scandal of [Pitt] and Gwyneth [Paltrow] where there was naked photos of him. And this was like, all the rage. I just thought, ‘I don’t know what all the fuss is about.’ I’m like, well that don’t impress me much, I mean what is all the fuss?”
After that, Twain decided to use her thoughts in the song she was writing, never really meaning to slight Brad Pitt at all.
“We see people naked every day,” Twain continued. “That’s really what I thought. I wasn’t picking on Brad Pitt. But that was just the association in that moment and things we make fusses about and whatever. Of course, it could have been any gorgeous guy.”
I can’t say I disagree with her when she says the fuss is often blown out of proportion, but to say he doesn’t impress you? C’mon, Shania (just kidding, you are the Queen of Country and know what you’re talking about).
If you want to relive the wonder that is 1997 Shania Twain, be my guest. You can also pre-order her new album, scheduled to come out September 29th, and is basically guaranteed to be legendary.
The gag reel for gas stations is golden. It seems to be a common theme to drive away while the gas nozzle is attached to your car. Many people try to stretch the hose to reach around the opposite side of their vehicle, with hilarious results.
I bet you’ve never seen anyone do what this woman
A pair of motorists in Russia caught all of this on camera. A man pulls up to the station, selects the type of gas, and leaves the pump to pay. While he’s gone, a woman approaches the car and begins the process again with a different grade of gas.
Clearly confused, she goes inside to pay and the real car’s owner comes back and switches the gas nozzle. She doesn’t understand what has happened when she comes back to the car and thinks someone is playing a prank on her.
We’ve shared lots of videos of great singers with you before, but this one takes the take. Most parents can barely manage “Polly want a cracker,” but this songbird from South America does a pitch-perfect cover of Rihanna.
If you’ve listened to the radio for more than five minutes since 2013 you’ve probably heard the song “Monster” by Eminem, where Rihanna sings the chorus. This bird has learned all the lyrics and has obviously rehearsed a lot. When you watch this version with the original music added in by YouTube user Ursinarium, it sounds just like the original!
See if you can tell the difference:
Somebody should get this dog on The Voice, pronto!
Unfortunately, the bird’s owner says this is the only English song it knows, and most of the time it only talks in Portugese. It must be a really big Rihanna fan to learn her songs in a second language!
Share this amazing bird’s performance with someone you know!
Chipotle lovers everywhere are about to lose their damn minds.
The Mexican food chain is giving away it’s addictively delicious side dish for free, and there’s really only one small catch to the offer.
Chipotle is running a promotion called “Spot the Imposter,” where customers are encouraged to go the Real Ingredients page on the website. If you can find the “imposter” ingredient on the site, you get a one-time offer for free chips and guac.
This is all part of a promotion for Chipotle’s new menu, which is completely preservative-free. The chain is aiming to simplify their food in order to make it more healthy for their customers. There are just 51 ingredients used in the menu, all of which include no GMOs, organic produce, and hormone-free meat. The tortillas now include just wheat flour, water, canola oil, yeast, and salt.
In the end, it doesn’t matter WHY they’re giving away free chips and guac. It just matters that they are.
Wall Street’s famous Charging Bull sculpture has just gotten a big makeover in time for International Women’s Day and it makes quite the impact.
The Charging Bull now has a little friend and it is actually really powerful. Standing directly in front of the angry-looking bull is a little girl, standing tall and proud. The plaque in front of the Fearless Girl that reads “know the power of women in leadership”.
She has been dubbed the “Fearless Girl” and it’s easy to see why. State Street Global Advisors used this empowering piece as a part of their campaign to get more women in positions of power at companies, specifically as board members.
When Lori Heinel, deputy global chief investment officer for State Street spoke to Business Insider she said that “the idea of having a female sort of stand against the bull or stand up to the bull just struck us as a very clever but also creative and engaging way to make that statement. Even though it’s a little girl, her stance is one of determination, forwardness, and being willing to challenge and take on the status quo.”
It’s quite the powerful visual to see, and hopefully people will think about the message a little bit when they see it!
When Luke Bryan said “You Can Crash My Party Anytime”, he probably didn’t mean it so literally.
Bryan, who is undeniably one of the biggest names in country right now, is on his Huntin’, Fishin’ and Lovin’ Every Day tour across the United States.
And if the summer of 2017 wasn’t big enough for him, Bryan has had more than his fair share of headlines. His favorite hockey team, the Nashville Predators, made it all the way to the finals of the NHL playoffs and Bryan sang the national anthem. His rendition was so powerful, it converted a lot of non-country fans to his music.
But a few allergies are the least of Bryan’s concern after the most recent incident.
So what happened that could have had a bigger impact than any of the above?
I doubt this is Luke Bryan’s “…Kinda Night.”
At 2:30 a.m. on Monday , police were called to the Sunrise Highway overpass on the Wantagh State Parkway. When they showed up, there was Luke Bryan staring them in the face. Well…sort of.
Bryan’s tractor trailer, carrying all his concert equipment, crashed into the overpass, closing two lanes for clean up. It took over four hours to clean up the mess, and the driver of the truck has been ticketed for failing to obey traffic signs, which indicated that tractor trailers were not allowed on the parkway.
It doesn’t seem like this incident is going to “Kill The Lights” on Bryan’s tour, but he’ll probably talk to his driver about going too “Fast.” No injuries were reported.
First they were chocolate-filled, then peanut butter, followed by pretzel and now caramel! These tasty bite-sized morsels are a treat for your taste-buds thanks to the growing line of flavors wrapped in a chocolate candy coating.
Mars has announced it’s newest addition and you will be able to take it home next month!
Set to hit store shelves in May, this is expected to be the biggest product launch in the brand’s history, which will now have permanent residence status in stores.
After a taste-test, you may or may not be encouraged to try this new addition to the M&M’s family.
“A few of us sat around popping the new caramel M&M’s into our mouths and chewing in silence. Finally, a chorus of pleased “hmm’s” arose. The candies are on the larger side, akin to the peanut butter flavor, and contain a chewy core of caramel inside the typical layers of chocolate and shell. The caramel is denser and chewier than the closest candy alternative, Milk Duds, and has a slight salty aftertaste,” wrote Food & Wine Magazine.
What do you think? Will you pick up a bag when they come out?
