15 Pictures That Will Make You Wonder What Is Wrong With People

When archaeologists go digging through old buildings, there are a few things they’re expecting to find. They will probably find some bones, maybe some interesting pottery, or some old weaponry, but sometimes they discover something that even surprises them.

However this time, archaeologists found something that led them down a crazy conspiracy theory, in an investigation about a cult that has been confusing people for decades now.

They discovered a pair of coins hidden under

A City Once Tried To Bury Its Garbage In A Mine, But Was Stopped By ‘The Simpsons’

Garbage collection and sanitation are one of the most critically important aspects of managing a city. As the world’s population grows bigger and bigger, so too does the amount of waster we produce, which ultimately has to end up somewhere.

Wikimedia

Few cities in North America are as painfully aware of this as the Canadian city of Toronto, which has a massive infrastructure full of millions of people, and a perpetually-present garbage problem. Not only does the city produce tons of waste every year, but it seems to have a problem with giving its sanitation workers the working conditions they desire: city garbage collectors have gone on strike several times in the last few decades, often leading to weeks where the garbage piled several feet high on the streets.

CBC

Always looking for ways to try to solve its ever-present sanitation problems, the city was actually in talks to have their garbage shipped to the small Boston Township south of Kirkland Lake, and dumped into an abandoned mine, which would become a landfill. The plan was going forward, but was stopped in part by, of all things, a particular episode of The Simpsons.

In the long-running cartoon’s 200th episode, “Trash of the Titans,” Homer Simpson becomes Springfield’s sanitation commissioner after making a bunch of lofty promises that he can’t possibly keep about the town’s garbage collection.

After blowing his entire year’s budget in a month, he solves their financial crisis by letting other cities dump their garbage into Springfield’s old abandoned mine. This works… until garbage begins to spring up throughout the city, and the town has to be evacuated.

This episode of the show was shown by members of the Toronto City Council to those who were approving the plan to move the city’s garbage. “It was absolutely stunning,” councilor Jack Layton told The Globe and Mail. “It was so accurate to what was going on.”

The plan was ultimately scrapped, though Toronto continued to ship its garbage to the state of Michigan, until that deal was repealed in 2006.

10 Monoply House Rules That Aren’t True At All

We all know the basic rules of Monopoly. We even know the unwritten rules, like table flipping is 100{49382ccf8aa3307257579caf6f867159d328eca730a0976815a1bacefc5bc6ee} allowed when things get intense, and if you can stash away money with no one noticing then it’s fair game.

But some “house rules” are a lot more common than others, and have become commonplace in Monopoly. Here’s the thing, though: they’re not accurate. These are some of the most common house rules that are in effect today, but that actually aren’t real.

iStock

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to take a full lap around the board before buying property. The official rules state you can start buying property right away. No one really knows where the “full lap” rule came from, but it was probably someone who was losing at the time or who wanted the game to last an extra 14 hours.

Thrillist

The most common way to play Monopoly is to put all the taxes in the middle, and then whoever lands on Free Parking gets the cash. The reality is, this doesn’t exist at all. Free Parking is just a square on the board, and it doesn’t do anything at all. Only bring up this rule if you’re not the one who landed on Free Parking.

Flickr

Get this: if no one wants to buy a property when it’s landed on, it gets auctioned off, meaning you can buy the property for less than it’s worth! It’s a decent strategy to hold onto, because you can find a bargain, but not a lot of people know about the rule. In theory, it would also make the game speed up a little bit, but then again, it will also probably cause more arguments.

Flickr

Being sent to jail in Monoply is pretty terrible, but it’s actually not that bad according to the rules. You can’t go around the board or buy anything, but you can absolutely collect rent on the properties you own, despite what your older brother told you all those years ago.

Flickr

Passing Go is a guaranteed $200, but landing on Go is often seen as the lottery, because you get to collect $400 instead of $200. Unfortunately, this isn’t an official rule. In the grand scheme of things, it’s something that everyone benefits from so it isn’t a huge deal. But if you’re looking to play an authentic game of Monopoly, don’t double the cash.

Lake Highlands Advocate

When you run out of money in the game, most people assume the properties go back to the bank and are officially up for sale once again. This isn’t the case. The properties you own go to the person who bankrupted you in the first place. This will make the game go by a lot quicker, and make your friends a lot more smug when they steal everything from you.

Wikimedia Commons

If you roll snake eyes, you automatically get $500 and to roll again. Neither of these things are true. All you get if you roll snake eyes is the opportunity to yell “SNAKE EYES!” and move two spaces.

Poki

While it is a lesser used house rule, loaning someone money in order to buy a property they landed on is still fairly common. It may do wonders to encourage the entrepreneurial spirit and friendships, it’s actually not a rule and it’s a bad game strategy if you’re the one loaning money.

Dan Q

This house rule is a weird one: you can start building houses even without owning all the properties in the category. That’s a big old nope. You have to own every property in the group…that’s why it’s called monopoly.

Board Game Stack Exchange

Another common house rule is that you don’t have to pick up a chance card when you land on the Chance space. This, obviously, is false. If you land on the space, you have to take the CHANCE. That’s why it’s called CHANCE. You can’t decide to not go to jail when you land on the Jail space. It’s just the way the world works.

How many of these rules have you played with?

7 Celebrities Who Decided It Was Okay To Date Teenagers

We all love a good celebrity couple, especially when they are soaked in controversy. The level of controversy seems to span the gambit of situations, but what we think gets people riled up the most is when their is a massive age gap between two people in a relationship. It gets especially juicy when one of the people from the relationship is still a teenager. For the purposes of this piece, we are defining “teenager” as anyone under the age of 20.

Here are seven celebrities who had no problem dating someone in their teens.

Henry Cavil may play the Man of Steel on the big screen, but he likes to keep his personal life as private as possible. People went nuts when they found out that his girlfriend Tara King is 13 years younger than he is. When Cavil met King, he was 32 and she was 19. Despite the age gap, he spoke well of his new girlfriend, but that relationship didn’t even last the year. It turns out that Cavil has also been on the other side of the equation, having dated a 32-year-old when he was only 19.

Digital Spy

Likely the most famous of all celebrity couples on this list, Elvis and Priscilla’s relationship would have been a massive scandal in the modern world, as he was 24 when he met the 14-year-old Priscilla. The couple met in Germany and dated there for several years before Elvis headed back state side. Priscilla eventually moved in with the King at his Graceland manor, and the rest is history.

PopSugar

This one just makes you feel unclean. Hollywood actor Doug Hutchison started dating Courtney when he was 50-years-old, and she was just 16, he even married her when she was still 16. He met her online through an acting workshop that he was teaching (which makes this even worse), and apparently Hutchison didn’t know that the young lady he was pursuing was so young. I don’t know what else to say about this.

Us Weekly

After his death, news broke that his long-time girlfriend Jasmine was only 23 years old at the time of his death. The couple had been together for nearly 7 years, which means that when they first started their relationship, Jasmine was only 16 years old compared to Walker who would have been 33 at the time. Jasmine was only 8 years older than Walker’s daughter, but she still developed into something of a step-mother for young Meadow.

Huffington Post

Why doesn’t this surprise anyone in the least? R. Kelly has gotten himself in trouble over the years when it comes to underage girls (remember the peeing video?), and it appears that it wasn’t a one time thing. When Kelly was 27 he started dating singing phenom, Aaliyah, who was only 15 years old at the time. They even got married when she was only 15, even though their marriage paperwork stated that she was 18 at the time, making this relationship even more confusing than it already was.

Heavy.com

This is a name I wasn’t expecting to be writing as a part of this list, but it turns out that Jerry Seinfeld had a thing for the younger ladies when he started dating 17-year-old Shoshanna Lonstein, when he was 38 tears old, and she was still in high school. After spending four years together the couple finally split, even after Seinfeld had allegedly proposed to her on her 21st birthday.

Zimbio

Another massively famous power-couple for this list, Sonny and Cher were 27 and 16 years old respectively when they first started dating. Cher was a high school dropout who was working as a dancer when she met Bono, who decided that he would hire her to work as his house cleaner before finding work for her as a backup singer. After only one month of living together, they had an “unofficial” wedding in Tijuana, Mexico.

The Mystery Of Olivia Newton-John’s Missing Boyfriend Continues

Twelve years ago, actress and singer Olivia Newton-John was on a promotional tour in Australia when her boyfriend of nine years, cameraman Patrick McDermott, vanished off the coast of California.

48-year-old McDermott was on an overnight fishing trip with 22 other passengers and three crew members when he disappeared on June 30, 2005. The entire mystery continued to deepen when investigators found his personal items, including this wallet, was left on the boat.

US Magazine

To add to the bizarreness of the case, McDermott wasn’t reported missing right away. His ex-wife filed a missing report about a week later after he failed to show up at a family event. It took another 45 days for Newton-John to publicly address her partner’s disappearance.

Newton-John re-married in 2008, and opened up about her former beau in an interview that year.

“It’s human to wonder but you know, those are the things in life you have to accept and let go. Because whenever you go through difficult times, there’s always those concerns,” she admitted. “But, I live on and of course questions come up, always, it’s human.”

NY Daily News

In 2008, the United States Coast Guard’s investigation concluded that he “most likely” drowned, but that did not stop people from speculating that McDermott faked his death to avoid paying back his debts, including $8,000 in child support.

In 2009, Dateline NBC aired a special in which investigators went to Mexico, where McDermott was rumored to be hiding after receiving multiple sighting tips. The lead investigator, Philip Klein, tracked down an address that allegedly confirmed McDermott was alive and living under his birth name, Pat Kim.

The manhunt was then officially called off, and the McDermott case was rarely discussed until recently. In November 2017, an Australian magazine published an article which included photos from a US media agency of a man believed to be McDermott.

Labotana.com

“The widow’s peak is exact. The eyes are very similar and the ears extend down on the head the same distance. I believe it is him,” Charlie Parker, a private detective, told the magazine. He also claimed that the man is a “90 percent match.”

Newspapers and tabloids all over the world picked up the story, but little did they know that there was more to the photos than meets the eye.

When the magazine broke the news of McDermott’s alleged whereabouts, it took everyone by surprise, but nobody was more taken aback by the claims than a man named Wes Stobbe.

The Canadian pub owner was in total shock when he saw the supposed photos of Newton-John’s ex-lover on a boat because he knew the real truth: the man in the photos was not McDermott.

Turns out, the press misidentified the images, and the man was actually Stobbe. Sounds like something straight out of a work of fiction.

Daily Mail

Stobbe and his wife, Bridget, were out on a boat ride in Mexico when the snaps were acquired.

“Apparently if you make the photo fuzzy enough and grainy enough, it might be passable, but I don’t think I look like him,” Stobbe told CBC Manitoba’s Radio Noon.

The businessman is still reeling from his accidental fame, and although the Stobbes were taken aback when the reports first surfaced, the family now finds the mistake funny.

He does have plans to return to Mexico in the near future, and jokes that he might get a T-shirt that reads “not Patrick,” to wear while on vacation.

Daily Mail

Stobbe offers an explanation for why he thinks his face was mistaken for McDermott’s.

“I have a face that seems to be recognized falsely more than once,” he said. “It happens to me so often for some strange reason.”

As for the real McDermott, he is considered dead and there is still no solid evidence that warrants another investigation. His son, who was about 11 years old at the time of his disappearance, is the sole beneficiary of his $100,000 life insurance policy.

Do you believe McDermott could still be alive? Let us know in the comments!

Listening to Christmas Songs Too Early May Harm Your Mental Health

The most wonderful time of year may not be the most wonderful season for everyone. If you’re constantly around someone who loves playing Christmas tunes before you’ve even had the chance to take a bite out of your Thanksgiving meal, you may have found that you feel slightly irritated.

Some experts suggest that those who work in retail and are forced to listen to approximately 8 hours of repetitive jolly tunes will not feel so jolly during the holiday season.

Christmas music is supposed to get you in the spirit of giving, but some statistics have shown that what starts out as love for one of the most loved holiday seasons slowly turns to hate.

So hold off on that Michael Bublé or Mariah Carey Christmas soundtrack.

Here’s why…

British clinical psychologist Linda Blair argues that the constant exposure to Christmas tunes too early in the season becomes a reminder to “buy presents, cater parties, organize travel, and all the more stressful chores during Christmas”.

“You’re simply spending all of your energy trying not to hear what you’re hearing,” Blair told Sky News.

Major retail chains in the U.S. use Christmas music to their advantage. Stores like Best Buy, Walmart, and JC Penny try to get consumers in the holiday spirit early on to maximize their profits. This push is known as the ‘Christmas Creep’.

Danny Turner, a programming executive with Mood Media, advises to avoid playing repetitive songs that tend to be more annoying than cheerful.

“The one I have in mind is The 12 Days of Christmas… Once I’m at the third day, I’m counting how many days are left. You don’t want any songs that feel like they last for 12 days,” Turner told the Times.

Like any song listened to more than a hundred times, it becomes oversaturated and we begin to dislike it. However, that may not be the case for everyone. Some people wish the holiday cheer could last longer.

Would You Cuddle With This Teddy Longlegs?

Growing up, I’m sure most of us had a teddy bear that we would spend all of our time with. They’re cute, cuddly, and meant to provide an overwhelming sense of comfort. But as it turns out, if you change one thing, and this loving companion can suddenly become really creepy.

People looking to order the Joyfay Giant Teddy Bear from Amazon have been surprised to receive a toy very different than what they had expected. The 6.5 foot tall bear is definitely the size that was promised, the only issue is where that height comes from.

The stuffed animals are starting a commotion online because of their freakishly long legs, which make up half the length of the bear.

The product description says the 18 lbs soft, silky giant just has more to love, its huge size offering more “huggability” than your average bear.

However, some people who have ordered the teddy are not happy, and have posted their hilarious realizations online as reviews.

It seems that the company selling the bears are not exactly being upfront about the proportions. In fact, I can see where some of the confusion is coming from…

So naturally, when people got their orders, some were a little confused…

I don’t know why, but their legitimate concerns are just so funny to read when they’re talking about a 6.5 foot tall teddy bear with legs that would make a model jealous!

Not everyone is upset with their purchase though. It seems the bear is bringing families closer together!

And of course everyone is having a laugh on Twitter about the whole thing.

Maybe the jokes have gone on long enough?

Tattooed Santa Was Asked To Stop Flipping Kids Upside Down, And People Are Angry

How many of us remember going to Santa as a kid to get our picture taken? If your parents were anything like mine, then you would find yourself dressed up in your Sunday best, told to be on your best behavior, and not to fight with your siblings.

Well, that tradition has been changing up lately, and one particular Santa is helping to make this a more fun activity to remember.

A mall Santa in Pennsylvania has gained a following over the years thanks to his unorthodox methods when posing for pictures.

Scott Diethorne, or Santa Scott, offers to take weird requests for people’s holiday photos. These have included holding pets, showing off his “Naughty” and “Nice” tattoos” inked along his forearms, and even flipping your kids upside down, and all for no extra cost.

Despite the joy that Santa Scott’s large fan base gets from his enthusiastic demonstrations, Cherry Hill Studios, the photo company working with the mall has asked him to “tone it down” this year.

And holiday shoppers have some thoughts on that.

When the company said that they wanted Santa Scott to ease up on the stunts, he respectfully obeyed, worried that the job that he loves to do was in jeopardy.

However, one fan heard about this predicament and posted about it on Facebook to mobilize the community.

The post got the attention of the town, and people began looking for ways to work with their favorite Kris Kringle. Now, another local photography studio has offered their resources to continue the tradition, and allow people to take their awesome Christmas photos with the coolest Santa in town.

His daughter, Megan Greene, said that there’s a reason people love going back to Santa Scott.

She says “his big heart, love for others, and his joy in being Santa Claus will always set him aside from the others.”

Netflix Just Proved That They Really Do Pay Attention To What You’re Watching

There are a whole load of cliches made up about the media streaming giant Netflix since it began offering it’s movie and TV show service in 2007.

We have all heard about Netflix & Chill with your significant other, or the funny glitches that appear to confuse movies and their descriptions with things that are way off!

And of course, the guilty-pleasure of watching the show for hours on end as we just keep hitting that “Continue Playing” button over and over again.

Only, we always thought that it was a vice we kept to ourselves, until Netflix decided to shamefully “out” certain fans of their latest in-house production, A Christmas Prince.

The movie is the romantic story of a reporter digging up a scoop on royalty, before realizing she has developed feelings for her mark. It’s a real gushy plot, and Netflix decided to have a little fun with some of their more dedicated viewers.

But not everyone is exactly happy with their habits being aired to the world!

And to be fair, they have a point.

Others may be a little on the suspicious side…

Though there were some people just in it for the drama!

And now the rest of us are worried about how much we’ve been watching certain shows…

What do you think about Netflix checking in on us? Let us know in the comments!

Family Perfects The Art Of Christmas Cards, So You May As Well Stop Trying

Does anyone else still get those yearly holiday cards from their relatives with the parents and children (and maybe pet) all nestled together looking happy and festive?

We all know that in reality they probably managed to snap a picture of the two seconds they weren’t fighting, but the sentiment is nice, and it’s a neat way to see how families grow throughout the years.

Mike and Laura Bergeron have taken this to a whole new level.

Their cards are hilarious, and it seems like they’ve been trying to outdo themselves for the past 14 years! What started as a funny joke has now become a tradition. Let’s take a look at the beginning of their journey and see how far they’ve come!

What a fantastic way to start. “Forty & Fighting It” in 2003!

What a way to update the in-laws!

It’s okay everyone, 2005 was a weird year all around.

That awkward, goofy love…2006 for the win.

For 2007, they went with a classic.

Check out more of their “peaceful greetings!”

“Merry Krishnas” for 2008, very clever.

This is apparently Mike’s favorite from the series because it looks “real.”

2010 was a special year, with a new member to the photo team! Welcome Gigi!

Think they were running out of ideas? WRONG!

While the first child is a celebration, this is what happens to your point of view after child number two…

But these past few years have been the best ones yet…

Freakin’. Fabulous.

Doesn’t everyone always say the holidays are such a drag?

Okay, 2015 actually looks pretty cool. Anyone? Just me?

Keeping it classy Begerons…

And without further adieu! 2017!

These Foods Could Lower Your Chance Of Getting Dementia

You might think that the only way your diet could have an effect on your mental well-being is what is in your food, but it turns out, the texture may have just as much to do with keeping your mind healthy.

Previously, the healthcare industry had recommended a variety of foods that help prevent certain diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer’s. These included leafy greens, whole grains, berries, and spices like cinnamon, sage, turmeric, and cumin.

They also warned against toxins that would have a negative impact on your brains ability to function. The usual suspects of caffeine, sugar, drugs and alcohol, and of course, stress, were all clear factors contributing to an unhealthy mind.

Dementia is a blanket term for when an individual’s ability to think begins to break down, with an apparent loss of cognitive ability or intelligence being key symptoms. Common flags for dementia include memory loss, indecision in basic tasks, and finding it hard to identify close family members and friends. This syndrome has done a lot of damage to families, and researchers are desperately looking for ways in which to find a cure and prevent it from happening in the first place.

In a recent study, scientists have found that it is the process of chewing that could have a significant effect, due to the nature of our traditional eating habits.

Whereas most people throughout history have been eating a diet based on raw foods, now-a-days we find ourselves sustained by overly processed meals that are made to be easily consumed. This is especially an issue as people get older and their teeth begin to decay or fall out.

So how does eating tougher foods actually prevent dementia and other brain maladies?

A study done several years ago found that a loss of teeth raised the risk of dementia. What they discovered was the act of chewing make more blood flow through the brain, so therefore people with less teeth do less chewing, and their brains are less active.

It began with them noticing that seniors who say they have difficulties chewing hard foods had a larger risk of developing dementia. Before they could say for certain however, they put together another study which used mice in a laboratory setting.

As it turns out, mice that were fed powdered chow (as opposed to solid foods) were much less likely to recall events that had happened 24 hours later. They finally had proof that long-term memory was affected by one’s diet!

So what should you be eating in order to keep your mind and body healthy?

As the scientists in the study revealed, it is our present day society that has more cases of Alzheimer’s and dementia than our ancestors. They trace this back to the raw diets that have existed until only recently in human civilization.

Since chewing is the basis for a healthy mind, many unprocessed foods can play a role in keeping the blood flow present and your thoughts active and alert!

Try partially-cooked vegetables!

Not only does eating vegetables in a more raw form make you chew more, but it keeps more of those healthy nutrients from breaking down, so you feel better too!

As we find ourselves in autumn, there are a ton of harvest veggies that are available now more than ever! Try getting your hands on some pumpkins, butternut squash, and asparagus before it gets too cold. Also, keep your eye out for root vegetable like carrots, beets, parsnips, and potatoes, which are naturally tougher and more fibrous!

When steaming, roasting or broiling these, try taking them out 5-10 minutes sooner than usually. That way, you know they are cooked all the way through but they still have a crunchy quality to them!

Or thicker pieces of meat?

No matter if you enjoy chicken more than pork, or lamb more than beef, there are a few ways you can ensure you are taking care of your mind while you chow down.

First, you should try cooking your meats a little longer. While this is a no-brainer for chicken and pork, if you enjoy your steak more on the rare side, maybe consider going for a medium sear, or getting that chicken a little extra crispy!

By cutting your meats into larger pieces, you will also force yourself to chew for longer periods of time. This should just be done for yourself though, make sure you only give children small pieces!

Go nuts!

Nuts have long been held by nutritionists as super-foods for preventing mental decay, and as long as you are not allergic, you can feel good about indulging in a delicious snack that will keep you happy and healthy!

Some good choices are almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, peanuts, walnuts, and pecans for their high levels of omega-3s, magnesium, folate, vitamin E and many others.

Give these tips a go, and share this post so that all your friends know these bizarre but awesome tips for preventing dementia!

Think You Like Spicy Food? This Pepper Might Change Your Mind

Some people do it for the challenge, others are genuinely interested in the flavor, but one thing is for sure, you can count me right out of this trend!

The Carolina Reaper is believed to be the hottest pepper in the world, and it even looks frightening!

It’s part of the Capsicum chinense plant family, and it surpassed the previous hottest pepper in 2013 when Guinness World Records said it was even hotter than the Trinidad Scorpion “Butch T”.

Peppers are ranked on the Scoville scale, which measures the spicy heat (pungency) of chili peppers. It deals with the capsaicin concentration in each plant, which is what causes the burning sensation when you eat it.

A bell pepper ranks 0 on the scale, as it is mostly water content. Jalapeno peppers are as spicy as most people feel comfortable going, and that ranks between 3,500-10,00 Scoville heat units (SHU).

Carolina Reapers? They are reported up to 2,480,000 SHU. That’s in the millions, folks.

So what does it look like to eat one? I’m so glad you asked…

Why they would do this to themselves, we have no idea

Obviously, the peppers are spicy. Even in the first minute the hosts start feeling the pain of the plant!

They’re not the only ones who want to give this a try

Bloggers and video hosts around the world want to prove their mettle by chowing down on these spicy bad boys, but many of them are unprepared for the severe pain that comes with exposing your mouth to this fiery fruit.

Is this a parenting win, or fail?

At least they had the right idea, having the ice cream nearby was the right call.

As the video mentions, you probably shouldn’t try this at home. The peppers are seriously hot everyone. If you find yourself in too much pain while eating anything spicy, always go for a glass of milk, as this will neutralize the heat!

A New Plan Would Power City Buses With Coffee

Step aside gasoline, because there’s a turbo-charged fuel coming to hit the streets of London, England!

It’s no surprise that many urban environments use cafes and coffee beans to ensure their city runs as smoothly as possible, however, this is the first instance of the caffeinated cherries powering the transportation itself.

So what is the science behind taking our precious lattes away from us and using it to turn motors instead of minds?

Well, coffee drinkers rejoice, because the project won’t actually be depriving anyone of their morning cup of joe.

Transport for London has been investigating the use of bio-fuels as alternative sources for energy for some time, but now they have stumbled onto a way to repurpose the grounds from the bottom of our mugs.

That’s right, they’ll be using the waste product to create a new bio-fuel. The company responsible for the new development, “bio-bean,” says they have already created enough coffee oil to power a bus for an entire year.

Just how much coffee does it take to do that?

Bio-fuel has already been developed from other food-related resources, such as canola oil, corn, and meat-based sources. In fact, London has already begun using these new fuels to power their transportation systems.

However, this is the first time that one of their 9,500 buses will be run solely on coffee-derived oil.

It is an interesting recycling concept. Londoners already create 200,000 tonnes of coffee waste a year, and the company has used some of that to create over 1,500 gallons of coffee oil so far.

The firm believes it takes 2.55 million cups of coffee to create the amount necessary to power a single bus for the year. Right now they are on track to running just one, but if Londoners want to ride the coffee express, they’ll need to drink more of the java juice than they ever have before.

How Stephen King Became ‘Richard Bachman’ And Why He Let Him Die

Even if you aren’t an avid reader, odds are, you know the name Stephen King. His books have become a household staple, and his legacy as an author is one of America’s greatest.

He is known for simply writing all the time, and producing amazing – albeit horrifying – story lines. After reading several of Kings many, many books, you may even be able to pick up on his signature style.

By 1977, his fame was already growing, and with his next book, The Stand, slated to be released, all signs pointed towards happy days for King. But he had ran into a snag with his publisher.

You wouldn’t think that a critically acclaimed writer with several popular bestsellers out would have a problem publishing his books. As it turns out, that’s exactly what King was struggling with even after the wide success of his first three novels, Carrie, Salem’s Lot, and The Shining.

To solve his problem, King was going to do more than write a story, he was going to create a character, and then make him real.

In those days, publishers had strict rules about how many books could be published by a single author in a year. How many? One, and only one.

This was too limiting for the King who could not help but write more and more stories. However, instead of fighting the company, he decided to just come up with another author!

He wanted to put out more content, but also wanted to see if he “still had it” or if his work was successful because of his notoriety. So he took the draft of his new book Getting It On, and re-titled it Rage, for release under a pseudonym.

According to King, when he needed to come up with his pen name, he just looked around the room. He saw a Bachman Turner Overdrive record turning, and on his desk lay a novel by Richard Stark, the pen name for author Donald E. Westlake.

Thus “Richard Bachman” was born. The books he published came to modest success, nothing like his regular sales, but good nonetheless. This continued for nearly a decade, until an observant reader noticed a few coincidences.

When Steve Brown got an advance copy of Richard Bachman’s latest novel Thinner, he knew something was up right away. Unlike the previous books, this was a definite horror story, with all the rugged, fantastical elements that make a King novel unique.

He did some digging and found out that the copyrights to the previous Bachman books were all under King’s current agent, and one for King himself!

He contacted King and said he didn’t want to necessarily reveal his identity, and asked how they would like to proceed. King responded and said that he would let Brown publish an interview unveiling his identity.

The writing world was stunned, but King was a little upset about it, saying that Bachman had developed a following of his own. He had developed an attachment to the character, but was at least able to publish several more books from his “second identity” later on in his career.

Anti-Gambling Advocate Wins $25,000 After Shutting Down Veterans Raffle

It should come as no surprise that public figures are not always who they appear to be. Politicians can be liars, spiritual leaders may be linked to corruption, and celebrities are embroiled in horrifying scandals.

For one Chicago do-gooder, the irony of her situation is almost too much. Kathy Gilroy has crusaded for years trying to stop the spread of gambling addiction across the country, and says she doesn’t tolerate any form of it, with a few exceptions.

Gilroy has been involved in the shutdown of numerous illegal lotteries and volunteers her time in order to raise awareness about the dangers of playing with their savings and luck.

It appeared no organization was safe when she played a role in shutting down the raffle held by Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), until they received a proper licence.

This is why it came as a shock when she revealed she claimed a $25,000 prize she won in a gambling cafe.

Now, many are asking what makes this different than the games she has criticized in the past.

When Gilroy not only won the prize, but claimed the $25,000 for herself, a lot of community members started asking questions.

VFW Commander Jerry Zeborowski spoke out about the confusing announcment.

“It’s ironic that someone who’s anti-gambling would enter something like that,” Zeborowski said. “That’s a little hypocrisy there, don’t you think?”

But Gilroy says that this is totally different than the gambling she is typically against.

“I called a pastor friend, and said, ‘Oh my God, should I send it back? What do I do? Do I donate it?'” she said. “He said, ‘Don’t feel guilty. You just got paid for all your volunteer work against gambling.’ It’s God showing his grace on me.”

She says that since much of her money was tied up investments, it made sense for her to take the money. She has participated in sweepstakes in the past and says she will continue to do so.

“It’s the gambling I oppose,” she said. “not the sweepstakes.”

What do you think about her situation?

Angelina Jolie’s Love Life Was So Bizarre Before She Met Brad Pitt

The Academy Award-winning actress has been the object of male desire since the 90s.

It wasn’t until the turn of the century that Angelina Jolie became a household name, where girls wanted to be her, and men wanted to be with her.

When she and Hollywood heartthrob Brad Pitt became a thing in the early 2000s, they became one of the most well-known and admired celebrity couples of the decade, receiving world-wide media coverage.

Their marriage in 2014 made us scream “Finally,” and their six children have been the subject of a lot of celebrity news stories.

After more than a decade of what seemed like a strong marriage, the couple split, leaving the world wondering what went wrong.

As people became more interested in learning about her divorce, news of Jolie’s past love life went viral – and this is where things got really weird…

Keep in mind, Jolie didn’t have a smooth-sailing childhood. She was constantly ridiculed for looking too nerdy, because she was thin, wore glasses and had braces.

Jolie dropped out of high school and starting wearing only black clothing, struggled with an eating disorder, and self-harmed as she gained a fascination for knives.

This was also the time she experimented with love and drugs.

How she experimented with love is a story that even Hollywood wouldn’t be willing to put on the big screen…

Before her high school love stories, Jolie was part of a gang called the “Kissy Girls” in kindergarten.

“I was very sexual,” she told OK! Magazine. “I created a game where I would kiss the boys and give them cooties. Then we would make out and we would take our clothes off.”

When Jolie turned 14, she had sex for the first time with her serious boyfriend, after receiving her mother’s consent.

“The emotions didn’t feel enough,” she told Cosmopolitan. “In a moment of wanting to feel closer to my boyfriend I grabbed a knife and cut him. He cut me back … We were covered in blood, my heart was racing. Then whenever I felt trapped, I’d cut myself. I have a lot of scars. It was an age when I felt adventurous and after a few beers things happened.”

Once she made a name out of herself in the celebrity world, Jolie revealed that she’s bisexual.

Before she married her first husband, Johnny Lee Miller, Jolie fell in love with model-actress Jenny Shimizu in 1996.

Their relationship didn’t pan out and Miller helped Jolie get out of her “dark days,” until they split up.

When she married Billy Bob Thornton in 2000, only a year after she split from Miller, she wore a vial of Thornton’s blood around her neck.

He revealed to students at Loyola Marymount University’s School of Film & Television that one day he came home and she suggested they do this.

“She thought it would be interesting and romantic if we took a little razorblade and sliced our fingers, smeared a little blood on these lockets and you wear it around your neck just like you wear your son or daughter’s baby hair in one,” he laughed, and jokingly added, “And we were vampires and we lived in a dungeon.”

The 42-year-old actress seems to have put her bizarre obsessions behind her ever since she met Pitt, but I don’t think we can ever forget all the events leading up to her highly publicized third relationship.

The World Is Ending For Oregonians Who Will Now Have To Pump Their Own Gas

You may not know everything about the car you drive, but most people can safely put on a seat belt, adjust their mirrors, and change their headlight fluid.

But life is about to get a whole lot harder for drivers in Oregon now that a new bill has been passed.

This year, lawmakers in the Beaver State added and removed a wide array of new rules that affects many different types of people, but only one has car owners up in arms. A self-serve gas law that prevented drivers from pumping their own fuel has been repealed and it has left many people worried about operating their vehicles.

The funny thing is, very few people actually noticed these changes to the laws until one news station asked drivers how they felt about these new rules.

And they had some passionate thoughts.

The news station made a post on Facebook asking their viewers if they agreed with the new laws.

They have so far received over 40,000 comments, and while it seems most people are okay with the change, the ones who disagree are pretty vocal about it.

“I don’t even know HOW to pump gas and I am 62, native Oregonian … I say NO THANKS! I don’t want to smell like gasoline!”

“Many people are not capable of knowing how to pump gas and the hazards of not doing it correctly. Besides I don’t want to go to work smelling of gas when I get it on my hands or clothes. I agree Very bad idea.”

“Yuck! Pumping my [own] fuel in freezing temperatures and handling a nasty ole fuel nozzle that 50 other people have touched that day (and who knows what cooties are on there), no thank you. It’s nice to not have to pump your own fuel.”

While their concerns are probably very heartfelt, if you’ve been pumping your own gas throughout your driving career, then you’ll probably find yourself smirking at their exaggerated worries.

The responses from outsiders are just as hilarious!

“FEAR NOT OREGON!!!! I’ve decided to move to Oregon to open a school to teach people how to pump their own gas … I understand Oregon, adulting is hard and sometimes you [need] someone to show you how. I’m here for you.”

“Apparently there’s an entire state of people in America who are incapable of filling their own car with petrol.”

For those concerned about the elderly or disabled, just because the law has been repealed doesn’t mean there aren’t staff available, so you can still get help pumping your gas.

Men Are Less Environmentally-Friendly Because It Makes Them Self-Conscious

Look, being a guy can be tough. You have to act macho everywhere you go, from the office, the gym, even at the grocery store, or you may be ridiculed by…someone, right?

Not to mention everything we are already responsible for. I mean, we have to pay for factory-farmed dinners, pay for gas and diesel, and if taking out the trash wasn’t enough, now we have to sort through recycling too?

Maybe this is why men are much less likely to be eco-friendly as compared to their female counterparts. As it turns out, the old wives tale of the husband unable to pick up after themselves is having serious ramifications for the earth.

Over 2000 individuals were interviewed in a study about their habits and decisions that they would make in terms of “buying green,” and one clear result was uncovering men’s reluctance to making these choices.

Perhaps even more surprisingly, this phenomenon was not even mysterious to the subjects in the study. Men knew exactly why they were acting this way.

Instead of blaming this one on the dog, men fessed up and explained that making “green” choices made them feel less masculine in their identity.

The study found that there were feminine biases in all sorts of decision-making processes.

“In one experiment, participants of both sexes described an individual who brought a reusable canvas bag to the grocery store as more feminine than someone who used a plastic bag—regardless of whether the shopper was a male or female.”

Not only that, but most men actually reported that any time they did something good for the environment, they felt less manly.

Clearly we have a lot to work on as a gender, but maybe admitting we have a problem is the first step? It’s a long road to recovery.
