If you thought Steve Harvey’s “Miss Universe” flub was bad, Warren Beatty just made one even worse.
At the 89th Academy Awards on Sunday, everyone was waiting for the Best Picture award to be presented. It’s the last award of the evening, and always ends up being the most controversial category of the evening.
However, it’s never been as bad as this.
Warren Beatty was the presenter for the Best Picture award. After he read the nominations, Beatty opened the envelope and announced La La Land as the winner. There was just one problem…
They weren’t the winners.
Turns out, Warren Beatty was handed the wrong envelope by the stage handlers and was given the enveloped for Best Actress, which Emma Stone in La La Land had just won.
The actual winner was the film Moonlight, but no one said anything until the La La Land cast and crew were halfway through their acceptance speeches.
Producers of the Oscars scrambled to solve the mix-up, with producer Jordan Horowitz running on stage.
“There’s a mistake. ‘Moonlight’ you guys won best picture,” Horowitz said to the shocked audience. “This is not a joke, come up here. ‘Moonlight’ has won best picture.”
As the cast and crew of La La Land awkwardly shuffled off the stage, a shocked Moonlight group came on stage to accept their award.
The director of Moonlight, Barry Jenkins, was floored when everything happened. “I’d never seen that happen before,” he said. “It made a special feeling more special but not in the way I expected. The last 20 minutes of my life have been insane … beyond life changing.”
The big question, of course, is how on Earth this could ever happen. PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) is the accounting firm that tallies Oscar votes, and also takes care of the envelopes during the show. They took full responsibility for the mix-up and offered up an apology.
“We sincerely apologize to Moonlight, La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and the Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for best picture. The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, [were] immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred. We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation.”
You have to see the video. Everyone seems kid of stunned as to what’s going on, but all try to play it off as professionals. One thing’s for sure…it definitely got people talking.
