The Food Standards Agency is now investigation a Toby Carvery restaurant, following a recent one star hygiene rating from food safety officials.
According to the FSA, the Toby Carvery will need to make a “major improvement” in all areas of food safety management. This will all necessitate improvements in the condition of the facilities, as well as increased cleanliness.
The restaurant, which is located in Middlesborough, decided to temporarily shut its doors following the December inspection. The local counsel said that inspectors found a “number of issues” that ownership took care of immediately.
When the Marton Road restaurant closed suddenly on December 21, their spokeswoman initially said it was in response to a “problem with the hot water supply.”
The report drawn up by the FSA cited many issues. However, the restaurant was rated “generally satisfactory” in food handling.
This Toby Carvery location has received considerable positive feedback on Tripadvisor recently, and is rated 3.5 stars out of 5.
In regard to the issue, a council spokesman said, “The premises are currently under investigation to establish whether any further action is necessary.”
A Toby Carvery spokeswoman at the location expressed displeasure at the low food hygiene rating that the restaurant received.
She said, “We voluntarily closed in December following an EHO visit due to a problem with the supply of hot water and also cleanliness issues found in the kitchen.
“The hot water supply was fixed and we completed an immediate clean of the kitchen. The EHO visited the next day and confirmed they were happy with our quick reaction and for us to reopen.
“We would like to reassure our guests that hygiene standards are of primary importance to our business and we are taking this matter extremely seriously.
“We will be in contact with the Middlesbrough Council to request a revisit and review of the rating as soon as possible.”
At the time of the closure, a Toby Carvery spokeswoman said, “Unfortunately, due to a problem with the hot water supply we’ve had to close the Toby Carvery Marton temporarily.
“We are hoping to get the issue fixed asap so we can get the carvery open again.”
The location reopened by 12:30 pm the next day, and the spokeswoman said, “We are pleased to confirm that we have resolved an operational issue we experienced yesterday which led to a temporary closure and we are now operating as usual.”
