Dolphins Sign Former Pro Bowl QB As Potential Tua Replacement

With Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s health at the forefront of conversation, the team is taking action to shore up its depth at the position.

As Tagovailoa faces growing concerns about his future after suffering a third concussion, the Dolphins have signed Tyler “Snoop” Huntley off the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad.

Huntley, undrafted out of Utah, has experience stepping in for star quarterbacks, notably filling in for Lamar Jackson during the 2022-23 season.

Huntley’s performance in that stretch was mixed: while he made key plays in the AFC Wild Card Round, his costly turnovers contributed to a season-ending loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Despite his limited playing time – starting just four regular season games – Huntley surprisingly earned a Pro Bowl nod as an alternate, an accolade that raised some eyebrows given his more interceptions than touchdowns.

Huntley now joins a Dolphins roster in a state of uncertainty.

With Tagovailoa sidelined and his health remaining a long-term concern, head coach Mike McDaniel is expected to start Skylar Thompson in the upcoming Week 3 matchup against the 2-0 Seattle Seahawks.

However, Huntley is likely to compete for the role if Tagovailoa’s recovery stretches into a prolonged absence.

The signing has sparked renewed discussion around Miami’s quarterback strategy, particularly the decision-making of Dolphins general manager Chris Grier.

Despite committing to Tagovailoa with a $212.4 million contract extension, Grier’s offseason moves regarding the backup quarterback spot are now facing heavy scrutiny.

Critics argue that Grier could have done more to ensure stability behind the oft-injured Pro Bowl signal-caller.

When Tagovailoa last sustained a concussion in 2022, Thompson was thrust into the starting role but struggled to make an impact, leaving the Dolphins outmatched.

Huntley, though an intriguing addition, may not provide the consistency fans are hoping for.

Still, Grier is facing the reality of the backup quarterback dilemma that haunts many NFL teams. As he pointed out in previous interviews, finding a reliable second-string QB is no easy task.

While the Dolphins await updates on Tagovailoa’s recovery and consultations with neurologists, they hope that either Thompson or Huntley can keep the team competitive in the meantime.

Huntley, known for his mobility and ability to extend plays, brings some upside to the offense. However, it’s safe to say the addition won’t excite Miami fans too much.

There are still rumors floating around of a possible Tom Brady comeback. While that would surely move the needle to say the least, the chances of him actually joining the Dolphins are extremely low.

What are your thoughts on Miami bringing Huntley aboard???
