Ohio State offensive lineman Josh Fryar has sparked controversy among fans after openly admitting his discomfort with playing in front of a national television audience.
Speaking to reporters, Fryar candidly revealed that he hasn’t always been a fan of the big stage, despite his prominent role on one of the nation’s top football programs.
Fryar, a senior and starting right tackle for the Buckeyes, was a first-team All-Big Ten selection last season.
But while his on-field performance has earned him accolades, the Indiana native admitted that the pressure of high-profile games has sometimes been a challenge.
“I don’t like it on national television, because if you get messed up, everybody knows,” Fryar surprisingly said. “The reporters, the announcers, everybody.”
Needless to say, his revelation quickly ignited frustration among Ohio State fans, who expect their players to embrace the spotlight and high-stakes nature that comes with being a Buckeye.
With Ohio State regularly playing in nationally televised games, the expectation is that players should not only be able to handle the pressure but embrace it.
“Every Buckeye fans face waking up to this Josh Fryar bullshit.”
“I’m praying for Plot twist and Josh Fryar has his best game in Scarlet and Gray. Please man. Because I and a lot of Buckeye Nation is kinda worried about if you’re mentally gonna be ready for this 60 min war.”
“Josh Fryar top 5 most hated buckeyes of all time now.”
“19 year old kid gets it but 25 year old Josh Fryar talking about ‘I don’t like playing under the lights.'”
“Shouldn’t be playing then..he’s mentally soft, & might cost them important plays, get him out of there.”
It should be noted that Fryar later attempted to clarify his comments, suggesting that his perspective had changed over time.
“Now, I feel more experienced and just ready to play the game. It’s a cool environment because you never get to experience anything like this ever again in your life,” he said, indicating that he’s grown more comfortable with the national spotlight as his career has progressed.
In his fifth season with Ohio State, Fryar has plenty of experience, having started for the past two years.
But some critics argue that if he still struggles with the pressure of big games, it could spell trouble for the Buckeyes, particularly with their recent history in marquee matchups.
For head coach Ryan Day and Ohio State fans, Fryar’s admission may raise concerns about the team’s readiness as they continue their push for another playoff run.
Fryar and the Buckeyes will certainly be put to the test this Saturday when they take on the explosive Oregon Ducks.
Not only is that a national television showdown, but it also promises to be one of the highest-rated games of the entire college football season.
What are your thoughts on Fryar’s controversial comments? … Should Ohio State fans be concerned? Or is the whole thing being overblown???
